English as a Second Language (ESL)

The Cedar Grove Public Schools K-12 English as a Second Language (ESL) program is a state-mandated support service designed to help English Language Learners (ELLs) acquire the skills they need to succeed in regular classroom settings.  ESL instruction focuses on developing English language proficiency in four-language skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing, while differentiating instruction with comprehensive input and hands-on, audio-visual, and kinesthetic activities.

To ensure that each student's individual language needs are addressed, district ESL teachers collaborate closely with content area and classroom teachers. Using the English Language Proficiency Standards and the New Jersey Student Learning Standards, our ESL teachers help students strengthen their language skills. The areas of daily instruction focus on different content areas such as Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies as well as social and instructional language.
