April ushered in the new, volunteer library initiative Adopt-a-Shelf for 4th graders. Student volunteers select shelves to check in on, including neatening the shelves, removing books that do not belong on the shelf, and reshelving books that have been checked in. The 4th graders have been taking their jobs seriously and enthusiastically, helping to make this program a success! I hope they’re ready to train next year’s 4th graders!
Library Media students in grades 2, 3, and 4 are working on a project to show off their knowledge of programming Makey Makeys and researching topics. They are required to choose a topic and research it, gathering facts and pictures to display on a poster. Additionally, conductive touch points will be included for viewers to activate the Makey Makey, which will be programmed to read out other facts about the topic and generate sound effects. So far, students have chosen a topic and gathered facts and pictures. In May, students will begin programming their Makey Makeys and demonstrating how they work. Students are excited to display their knowledge in such an interactive and interesting way!
Library Media students in Kindergarten and grade 1 are focused on computer programming. Kindergarteners have learned how to access and log in to the platform, as well as how to navigate the workspace provided. Now they will be moving on to using algorithms to navigate various characters through a maze. While Kindergarteners are just starting to program, 1st graders are finishing up with “events,” which enable programmers to produce interactive experiences, such as video games, for users. To demonstrate their mastery, students will create a mini-game to share with their classmates.
And a friendly reminder: The library’s end-of-year procedures have begun, including closing out the library. All books are due back by Friday, May 16, 2025, to ensure books can be inventoried, repaired, and organized, as well as enabling time to assess fines for any lost books.
