Seed dispersal

Spring has sprung in second grade! The second grade class is learning about plants. They have been focusing on the impact pollination and seed dispersal have on the whole community around us! Students created a pollinator and the whole class reenacted what it would look like to pollinate. Instead of using pollen, which would make some of us a bit sneezy ACHOO, students used paper, glue, and beads to replicate the process. Everyone had a blast!

Through Mystery Science resources, the question posed to second graders was, “How Did a Tree Travel Across the World?” Through guiding questions, videos, and hands-on materials, second graders made models of three different kinds of seeds. They released them into the air to see how they would travel. Students discussed how the structure of a seed affects how it travels into the air. To wrap up their plant unit, students created a graphic novel to show how animals help seed dispersal. Second grade students have previously learned about how authors create graphic novels. The program, Book Creator helped bring the graphic novels to life!
