South End Elementary

Our third graders have been reading their second novel of the year, The Cricket in Times Square. This novel shares the story of a cricket named Chester who accidentally ends up in a Times Square subway station. He meets friends that help him along the way, but also get him into some trouble. When trying to celebrate Chester’s 2 month anniversary of being in New York, a lovely dinner filled with music and dance takes a tragic turn when a fire breaks out. In conjunction with this scene, the students worked in groups to report this terrible event! A news reporter, eye witness, and camera person shared the news of this event to the public through a “breaking news” news report.
